In and Around WSU

Pullman Area Profile

Pullman Combines Best of Many Worlds

Pullman offers much to visitors, students, and those seeking a lifestyle that combines a beautiful rural setting with the benefits of a renowned research university. Among the traits that distinguish the community: a wide range of cultural and community activities, excellent public schools and health care services, a low crime rate, and a lack of traffic jams and air pollution.

The city’s 25, 905 residents are a mix of Washington State University students, faculty, and staff along with families and individuals employed in education, agriculture, government, retail, trade technology, and services. Pullman is situated on four hills—Sunnyside, Pioneer, College, and Military—that divide it into four nearly equal quarters.

Research and scholarship conducted at WSU impacts the state, the nation, and the world. These activities make significant contributions to Pullman’s economy as well as shape its cultural and social character.

The area’s focus on higher education is further enhanced by the presence of the University of Idaho, only eight miles away in Moscow, Idaho. Like WSU, the UI is a major teaching and research institution, and the two universities participate in a number of joint educational and research endeavors.

The Palouse area is also known as the one of the world’s top producers of wheat, lentils, barley, and dry peas.

The outdoor recreation possibilities in the area are exceptional. Opportunities abound for hiking, camping, mountain biking, snow skiing, fishing, boating, and rafting.

Pullman is located 78 miles south of Spokane and 280 miles east of Seattle.
